Top Mary Kay Consultant in the Country Tells Her Story

NO PARTY OR FACIAL REQUIREMENTS TO MEET

In 1978 I was a stay-at-home mom of two toddlers looking for a way to earn extra income. Mary Kay Cosmetics was fairly new and looked like fun, so when an 18-year-old friend told me about the opportunity, I signed up as her first consultant.

I was so excited when my kit arrived!

That first kit included a hot pink case with slots to insert tubes of different colors of makeup, plastic trays with mirrors (I still have one), a flip chart, sales brochures and some samples. Mary Kay Ashe's face was on all the literature, giving great sales advice and cheering you on. Before long I was giving facials and making new friends.

Unfortunately, my husband was transferred to another state, and then we moved again a little over a year later. So I gave up on my Mary Kay dream.

Fast forward to 2011, my toddlers are all grown, and I'm only working three days a week. My sister, who is a Mary Kay consultant, called me and said during the month of April I could sign up as a Mary Kay consultant for only $50, and receive free business cards, a personal sales website for $25 a year, samples, full-size mascara, eye-makeup remover, Day and Night Solution, Timewise moisturizer and sunscreen, 12 tubes of makeup, how-too DVDs, brochures, mixing trays, applicators, etc. $50.00? Seriously. I didn't hesitate. I signed up again not only because I have used Mary Kay for 35 years and know the products are superior to any other over-the-counter products out there, but because I was excited by how far the company had come and wanted to offer the opportunity to others. An opportunity to become a Mary Kay millionaire.

One of the main objections to Mary Kay "back then" was being required to do a set amount of parties or facials every week. No more. Today, you can choose to do a web-based business only, by simply creating an email list and sending your friends and relatives an online brochure and link to your personal beautiful Mary Kay website. But, if you do enjoy having parties, or doing facials and beauty consultations, it is easy to follow the step-by-step DVD which comes in your kit, together with the flipchart, and do exactly what the consultant on the video does.

FABULOUS KIT AND ESSENTIALS

When the kit arrived, I was delighted. Not only was everything I could possibly need to start my business there, it came with a huge, tasteful quilted black bag that, in my opinion, was worth the $50 alone.

Next, I followed the directions I received in my "welcome" email, and logged onto the Mary Kay website for new consultants and watched all the training videos, ordered my free business cards, and set up my personal website.

You do not need to purchase anything else to get your business off and running. Period.

You earn 50% commission on all sales.

Unlike the 1975 opportunity requiring $250 upfront, today, you only need the kit to begin. Then, with the kit and website, you should be able to generate enough sales to purchase your first qualifying order of $200 wholesale/$400 retail. There is no time limit on when you place your first qualifying order. However, you must qualify in order to sign up others to begin your downline which is the key to millions.

Having a downline, from which you receive a percentage of sales from your downline, is the KEY to your Mary Kay success.

After you sign up, you will receive phone calls and emails from your upline suggesting you purchase $600+ product in order to receive bonus product or to "qualify" for this or that. My advice is, if you don't have the money, do not be persuaded to purchase additional products. Instead, read my next Mary Kay Hub "Building Your Mary Kay Downline By Paying It Forward" and put your profits into that aspect of the business.

MY FRIEND IS A MARY KAY MILLIONAIRE

That 70's friend that signed me up is now a National Sales Director and received nearly $17,000 in commissions in December, 2011.

She didn't have a college degree. She didn't have any sales experience. She came from a rural area and small town of less than 1,500 people.

She is a Mary Kay millionaire.

CONCLUSION

WILL YOU BE THE NEXT MARY KAY MILLIONAIRE?

Mary Kay Ashe was a genius with a idea that created an opportunity for ANYONE to become a millionaire.

I've BTDT! - Only it was in 1980 when I quit my good job and started full time. I made Director in 1982 and continued till 1985 when for a combination of reasons, I left. I had the privilege of knowing Mary Kay. Back then, new directors were invited to her "round" house and served her home-made cookies at the end of the training week, which was convenient for me, since I lived (still do) in Dallas where Corporate Headquarters is.

How about that! My sister-in-law, Pam Tull, started with MK in 1976 and her commissions for December were $17,000.00. She also met MK and told me about being able to go into her bedroom closet and seeing all her wigs, etc. I was one of her first recruits, but my husband's corporate job had us moving from Delaware to South Carolina, to North Carolina, so I couldn't really build a downline because, of course, we didn't have the Internet and all the things that make building one so easy now. Then I signed back up under my baby sister. I love Mary Kay Cosmetics, the company philosphy is awesome. The starter kit is $100 and has over $400 worth of retail products in it, plus videos, and tons of sales materials. It's funny, because I was thinking you didn't look anywhere near 80, so it shows you used the product. I started using the sunscreen when it first came out and people tell me I look 10 years younger than my actual age.

That's a most impressive record. What was Pam Tull's position? Sounds more than a consultant's monthly commission, or even a Sales Director's. Her name is a little familiar. Mine was Ann Holdeman then - - but not the National Sales Director by almost the same name. Yes - we got to prowl in Mary Kay's closet and sit in her big bathtub and have our pictures taken. What fun.

I think what impressed me most about Mary Kay was that if she were speaking to you in a room with hundreds of people, she make you feel like the only person in the room she saw. And she also could look right into you. What always impressed me about her were her own traits.

Being in MK all sounds so different now. Everything was done "from scratch" by comparison. We did "warm chatter" to make contacts wherever we went. I was up and dressed to the nines early in the day and didn't get out of the duds till time for bed. It was considered important to look the part any time one might see anyone - always ready to respond to a call or an opportunity. We thought it was really fantastic when they had 8MM movies we could buy and buy a projector on which to show them to our units. I did my unit's newsletters with literal "cut and paste" and printed them at Kinko's. No computers yet.

I'll bet you do look youthful and thank you for the compliment. People are surprised at my age. I started taking care of my skin and protecting from the sun long before I was involved with Mary Kay - before there WAS a Mary Kay Cosmetics, in fact. And I'm a big believer in what one puts inside, too.

No, dear. Check the math. I joined Mary Kay in 1980. That was 32 years ago. I was 48. If you want to do it, you should just do it.
